Photography is fun with the Olympus FE-170

The FE-170, with its 3x zoom, proves that photography is fun. With a no-nonsense one button, one function design and a 6.0 million pixel CCD, the FE-170 makes taking and printing even larger size photos a cinch. There's even an on-screen Help function included, to give easy-to-understand descriptions of camera settings. Life couldn't be any easier! Once a shot has been taken you'll want to show it off. This can be done either on its large 6.4cm LCD screen, or by printing copies to pass around. Prints can be made either at home, by connecting the cameras directly to a suitable printer (no fussing around with a PC needed here!).

We all enjoy taking photos on holiday and at family occasions and at these times it's best to keep things simple. The FE-170 is designed for minimum fuss and maximum shooting pleasure, as its one button, one function design often makes searching through menus to find functions a thing of the past.

This 3x zoom camera delivers true-to-life photos, packed with 6.0 million pixels worth of detail. For familiar shooting situations such as Sports, Fireworks or Self-portraits ten scene modes are available, as well as a Super Macro setting that focuses as close as just 5cm. The FE-170 features a Movie setting with the length of the movie clip only limited by the amount of memory available. This can be either the cameras' internal memory, or an optional xD-Picture Cards.

Once shots have been taken, the large 6.4cm LCD screens allows the results to be viewed and shared with friends right away. And should you ever be at a loss as to what any of the settings actually do, the very same LCD screen is used to display an easy to understand explanation, courtesy of the FE-170's Help functions.

For more advanced users who have a PC, the FE-170 comes with the Olympus Master Software which can be used to download, organise, edit, and print photos using a computer. And the update to the Plus version even allows special artistic effects, including 3D and oil painting, to be applied to photos.

This economical model combines ease-of-use with an attractive compact design, using standard AA batteries which are readily available. It's a great choice for beginners and all those demanding straightforward fuss-free photography.

Good budget camera
Good points: Low price. Simplicity. Good quality results. Runs of disposable batteries - good when traveling. An effective anti shake system.

Not so good: No viewfinder - Since you cant see the screen in bright sunlight, daylight shots can be a bit of a lottery. Lens only f3.1, rather than the expected F2.8 - Low light performance is not the best. High battery consumption - 40 shots on a set of alkalines, but it does just need 2 AA's.

Overall a good budget choice.

what a camera
A fantastic camera at an incredible price. I bought the camera 2 weeks ago and have had some fantastic photos from it. Used them on the PC and printed them off and all excellent quality. Got one blown up to 10 x 8 and there is no fuzziness or blurring - it looks as good as the standard 7 x 5 photos. Recommend a 512mb memeory card as well as camera only holds 10 photos on its own memory. This is my 2nd digital camera and is light years ahead of the fuji 4mp camera I had before. Well done Olympus
