Nikon D50
Last summer I bought the Nikon D50. It was a big step as I previously took lots of slides and was somewhat concerned to lose quality
being used to the fantastic Fuji film results.
I soon learnt to use the camera and the photos are really great and the advantage is that you can see them practically straight away on
your PC. You also stop paying for films and you can throw poor pictures away without feeling you are chucking your money out of the
window.
The lens 18-55mm is fine. I mainly use the camera on "aperture mode" as I like to control the depth of field. At time I have used the
other modes and the results are each time very good.
The camera is light, fits well in the hand and is easy to use. A great buy.
Great First Digital SLR
I've owned and used many compact digital cameras but not an SLR, however I have used many film SLR cameras. I decided to have a go with a
digital SLR after much research and reading through reviews from magazines and online reivews.
It has to be said that the camera industry seems to sell a lot of it's cameras on the fact that they have a really high mega-pixel rating
like 8 or 10 MP, but who really understands what this means? The fact is that a 6MP SLR like the Nikon D50 will be be leagues ahead of a
£100 digital compact camera with an 8MP sensor on many fronts. The size of the Nikon D50's sensor is far larger than 6 or 8 MP sensors
that are used in compact cameras and because of this they produce better results, but this is a different subject that is quite complex
to explain. However, lesson one for me was that pixel count is not really that important unless you want to drastically crop or print at
large format (i.e. A4 or above).
Any way, back onto the review!
The D50 is a great camera! It is aimed at the beginner for using digital SLR's and if you're not familiar with SLR's, please don't waste
your money on the more expensive models, you simply won't use many of the functions you pay for.
What impressed me was the simplicity of using it. Yes, you will need to read the instruction booklet to get an idea for how to use the
buttons on the camera, as some have to be used in combinations to get the desired result. E.g selecting a manual mode to alter the ISO
settings or flash intensity.
(If all you want a camera for is to point and shoot, don't consider an SLR as you may not use all of the functions they are designed for.
They do usually have fully automatic controls, but that's not what they're about)
Once you're used to the D50 and you've had a few weeks of use it all clicks into place and you'll find yourself knowing exactly where to
go to get the manual settings you want, and quickly thanks to the excellent ergonomics and simplicity of the camera. But, don't get me
wrong, this is quite a powerfull SLR for the money.
The Monitor at the back is very good, bright and very clear, as is the viewfinder, and the LCD on top of the camera which details the
main settings. The menu is also simple to use with a help function for most of the functions and settings in case you forget what they
are for.
The camera is also a good size to hold in the hand and is well weighted even though it doesn't have a metal body. All the controls are
easy to reach and once you're used to it, you can reach them without looking.
The only downside I found was that the lenses that I got with the camera were not exactly 'high quality' and were not very fast, but they
are useful to have in the bag. I got hold of a Tamron Asperical XR DI 28-75mm f2.8 lens which really makes this camera a whole lot more
useful. Low light situations are now really manageable and the results are great (after a bit of tweaking with the white balance settings
etc).
All in all, I'm well chuffed with this camera and will be using it for many years to come without even considering upgrading because it
does exactly what I want it to, and to a very high standard for the money. I'm happy with my '6MP camera', because it takes fantastic
photo's (leagues ahead of any 8MP compact cameras i've used) and I don't really need to blow my photo's up, but if I ever did, it would
do A4 very nicely, A3 is a different matter though!
Excellent Camera - but don't expect good after sales service
Fantastic camera that is ideal for a DSLR beginner like me. However, after-sales service from Nikon is shocking. My camera got dust in it
(careless lens changing on the beach by me) and needed cleaning by Nikon - it has been with them for almost a month and they keep telling
me they have a lot of work and there is a queue - may not bode well for reliability of the model? I also tried to upgrade the free
software sent with the camera (it needs upgrading to burn your movies onto CD) - they tell me the upgrade is not available in the UK and
don't know when it will be.
